Scoping technologists are trained to edit and transcribe information that is obtained by court reporters. Certain characteristics and traits are beneficial to the responsibilities of a scoping technologist, and allow you to pursue a number of careers within the field. If you have the right personality you can enter into careers in scoping technology by obtaining a higher education that will provide the skills and knowledge that is necessary for success.

Your success depends on the characteristics and skills that you can bring to the field. You will need to be detail oriented, able to sit for long periods of time, be unbiased, confidential, organized, and self motivated. All of these traits are beneficial to the field of scoping technology because the profession requires you to edit and record legal proceedings. There are two types of scopists:
  • those who do official work
  • those who do freelance work
Either type of work can require that you possess certain skills and traits. Scopists or scoping technologists need to have certain abilities that are beneficial to the field of court reporting.

The ability to review, proofread, and edit court transcripts requires you to be fluent in English, have good communication skills, be flexible, have knowledge of technology, be focused, and have good listening skills. These traits and skills are beneficial because you must translate short hand stenography that is recorded by a court reporter and check it for errors before sending it back to the court reporter. Having a personality such as ISFJ (Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging) and ESFJ (Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging) can also be beneficial or necessary.

If you are interested in the field of scoping technology you can pursue a variety of careers. You can work your way up to being a court reporter, reporting assistant, scopist, or court clerk. Each of these career areas will require that you receive a higher education in order to pursue a professional career. The skills that are obtained through higher education will help you pursue the career you long for. In addition to obtaining proper training, you can succeed by utilizing your personality.

If you are dependable, proficient, consistent, a problem solver, and independent you can make a successful scopist because you possess traits and characteristics that are necessary for a successful career. If you are interested in obtaining the required training and education you can do so by enrolling in an accredited school or college that offers scoping technology degree programs. Doing so will help you choose the career path that is right for you and learn about the required traits and characteristics.
